Xanthoparmelia amphixantha (Müll.Arg.) Hale

  Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, forming rosettes to 1–3 cm wide. Lobes often imbricate, ±discrete and separated near margins of thallus, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.5–2 mm wide, lacking lobules. Upper surface pale yellow, convex, dull, maculate especially towards lobe apices, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins not black; often pale blackish brown near lobe apices. Medulla white. Lower surface partly canaliculate, yellow-brown to dark brown, yellow-rimmed; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple or sparsely branched, 1–3 mm long, black. Apothecia very rare, sessile to subpedicellate, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple prominent, crenulate, persistent. Ascospores 9–10 × 6 µm. Pycnidia absent. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid, norstictic acid (minor), cryptostictic acid (trace) and with or without unidentified compound.
     
  Common on soil in mallee scrub and subarid grassland areas of S.A., N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.
