Visitors to the Australian National Herbarium

Visitors wishing to use the herbarium collection should make prior arrangements with either the Curator, Brendan Lepschi (ph: 02 6246 5167) or Collection Manager, Jo Palmer (ph: 02 6246 5523). The Dicotyledon and Monocotyledon plant families are housed on three floors of the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research located on the CSIRO Black Mountain site, and the Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Cryptogams are housed in the herbarium on the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) site.

Both sites are open Monday to Friday, except public holidays; working hours are 8.30 am to 5.00 pm on the CSIRO site, and 9.00 am to 5.00 pm at ANBG. Please sign in on arrival at each reception.

Specimens belonging to the visitor that are required for study in the herbarium must first be taken to the Preparation Room for freezing for 48 hrs. This is to eliminate the risk of introducing insect pests into the herbarium. Please contact the Curator before your visit to arrange this.

No specimens or books belonging to the Australian National Herbarium may be taken from the herbarium without prior approval.

Visitors are required to observe the following:

The Volunteer Program

The Volunteer program in the Centre is a subsidiary of the Volunteer program at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Volunteers working in The Centre are associated with the herbarium and undertake some of the more routine tasks involved with specimen handling and preparation. These tasks involve mounting of vascular plant specimens and cryptogam specimens. Archival materials are used when mounting specimens for incorporation into the collection. Volunteer tasks are also available in the Loans and Exchange part of the herbarium on the CSIRO site, including the checking of lists of specimens and packaging specimens for postage.

See the Herbarium Volunteers web page for further information.
