Australian Plant Image Index

click to enlargeThe Australian Plant Image Index manages the photograph collection and illustration archive for the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research.

It is managed within the administrative structure of the Australian National Botanic Gardens and is located on the Gardens' site.

The collection contains about 40,000 35mm slides, mostly Kodachrome, of portraits, habit and habitat of Australian plants, both in the wild and in cultivation. Many of these photos are vouchered to specimens in the Australian National Herbarium or through lineages of living plants back to such an original voucher.

The Index is also in the process of cataloging and digitising line art produced as part of botanical taxonomic research or publishing projects within the Botanic Gardens or the Herbarium.

Access to the web interface of the collection database is:
http://www.anbg.gov.au/photo/index.html
The illustrations are not yet on line.

Photos from the collection are commercially licenced for publication.
