The only place in the world where you can see one third of Australia’s 21,000 native plants in one day! Through this living encyclopedia of native plants we offer hands-on activities, discovery based expeditions, free teacher resources, fresh air and heaps of educational fun.

Come early in the day before the other attractions are open. Book into Hudsons Café in the Gardens for breakfast and follow up with a tour of the mysterious rainforest gully. Relax late in the day, or come for dinner and a Twilight Forest Adventure.

Something different to do at night...
Twilight Forest Adventure – It’s Awesome!
Our most popular student tour. Discover the mysteries of the rainforest at night. Join our Twilight Guides for a fun evening by torchlight as we put all our senses to the test. Follow up with a cup of hot Milo. All equipment is provided, including torches and wet weather gear. 1½ hrs. Cost is $8 per student. Maximum 80 people in total.
Hudsons in the Gardens is Canberra’s most popular garden café. Why not arrange for your exclusive group dinner for 6pm (6.30pm during daylight saving), followed by a Twilight Forest Adventure. Cost for dinner $9.50 per head.

Something for daytime...
River Model
Students from all over Australia love this hands-on activity so be sure to book the amazing River Model. Come and design your own watercourse in our 10m long tray model – ideal for groups! Plant your own plants, create your own snags and waterfalls. 1 hour. Cost is $5 per student. Ideal number is 25 students/1hr session, 26-50 students / 2 hours. Teachers must choose 1 DIY Explorer.
Arrange lunch with Hudsons, and follow up with an hour on the River Model. Cost for lunch $6.50 per head.
Botanical Expeditions
Our experienced presenters can take groups of 10-12 students on fascinating Botanical Expeditions. Eg “Around Oz in an Hour” introduces students to the diversity of Australian plants and landscapes across our continent. 1 hour. Cost is $5 per student. Max 50 students /1 hour. Allow 2¼ hrs for groups over 50 students.
Why not book your group in for 7.30am breakfast, followed by a Botanical Expedition that takes in the rainforest gully when it’s at its most beautiful? Breakfast $6.50 per head.
DIY Explorers: Do-it-yourself for free!
Introducing the Gardens' treasures...
Around Oz in an Hour ~ Take in some of the 7,000 species from all over Australia. Collect some brochures, with maps of the Gardens, from the Visitor Centre, and walk the Main Path. Take in the ambience, learn from the signage and see some of the diverse living collections in the Gardens. Walk takes 30-40 minutes and finishes in the rainforest gully.

Preparing for your visit
Most programs take about an hour, but you can stay as long as you like. Advise students to prepare for the weather. The Gardens take on a special atmosphere in the rain and it is our policy that all programs go ahead, irrespective of weather. However, in exceptional circumstances of strong wind or fire threat part or all of the Gardens may be closed.
Opening Hours
The Gardens are open 8.30am – 5pm daily. Education programs run weekdays.
