A strangling spreading tree to 25 m tall, often starting life as an epiphyte or creeping shrub on exposed rocks.
On Christmas Island it is common in primary forest on the Plateau, or against rocks in exposed situations.
It occurs from Sri Lanka, India, through southern China and the Philippines to PNG and Australia.
